Wall cost doesn't rise linearly with height — it compounds. Taller walls need bigger base excavation, more block per running foot, geogrid reinforcement layers tied back into the slope, and above certain heights, an engineer's stamped design. A 3-foot wall might run $40–$75 per face foot; an engineered 8-footer can triple that. If a bid for a tall wall looks suspiciously cheap, the missing money is usually the reinforcement.
Segmental block (the workhorse): engineered, consistent, mid-priced. Natural stone: beautiful, heavier labor, premium price. Timber: cheapest up front, shortest lifespan — Ozarks moisture eventually wins. Most of our Springfield builds are block for exactly that math.
Excavated, compacted base. Clean gravel backfill. A perforated drain pipe at the heel, piped to daylight. Geogrid where height demands. This is half the cost of a proper wall and 100% of the reason it's still straight in 20 years. Ozarks clay swells when saturated and pushes roughly twice as hard as dry soil — a wall without drainage isn't a wall, it's a dam on a countdown. When you compare quotes, compare what's behind the face, not just the face.
Machine access (a backyard you can't get equipment into is priced by wheelbarrow), slope steepness, tear-out of a failed existing wall, and drainage complexity — sometimes the wall needs a slope drainage plan around it to stop the problem that killed its predecessor.
Failed caps, one settled section, or a drainage retrofit are repairs — often $500–$3,000. A measurable lean, multi-course bulge, or rotten timbers means rebuild; a patch just restarts the failure clock, which is why we quote both paths honestly when both are real options.
